Fake Netflix invoice or email: real or phishing?

Almost everyone has Netflix, or knows someone who does. That's exactly why "Netflix" is such a popular disguise for scammers. The email claims your payment failed, your account is about to be blocked, or that you need to update your details. It looks polished and familiar. And yet something isn't right.

Stay calm, take a closer look, and you'll see straight through it.

What does a fake Netflix email look like?

A fabricated example:

From: Netflix via no-reply@netflix-billing.com Subject: Your payment could not be processed

Dear customer,

We were unable to process your last payment. To avoid interruption to your subscription, please update your payment details within 24 hours.

[Update payment details]

The Netflix team

The button leads to a fake login page and then a fake payment form, where you're asked to enter your Netflix password and your bank or card details. Everything you type goes straight to the scammer.

The signals that give it away

  1. The sender address is wrong. Real Netflix emails come from @netflix.com. Addresses like netflix-billing.com or netflix-payment.net are fake.
  2. You're asked to "update payment details" via a link. Legitimate changes are always made by going directly to netflix.com or opening the app — never through a link in an email.
  3. Urgency and threats. "Within 24 hours", "or your account will be blocked".
  4. A generic greeting ("Dear customer") instead of your name.
  5. A link pointing to a lookalike domain rather than netflix.com.

What to do

  • Don't click anything. Want to check your subscription? Open the Netflix app yourself or type netflix.com into your browser.
  • Only log in via the official site or app, never through a link in an email.
  • Not sure? Forward the email to check@islegit.email for a free verdict in under a minute.

What you should NOT do

  • Don't click "update payment details" in the email.
  • Don't enter your Netflix password or bank details on any page you reached via a link.
  • Don't pay anything to "prevent a block".

If you already entered your details

Change your Netflix password immediately on netflix.com, and change it everywhere else you use the same one. If you entered bank or card details, call your bank right away to block the card. Report the incident to your country's fraud service (in the Netherlands, the Fraudehelpdesk on 0800-2117).

Still not sure about an email? Forward it to check@islegit.email and get a clear verdict in under a minute.
